July 2013 rounded out nicely, when I attended the latest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Dave Birkett, seminar to be held at Laurence Sandum’s Black Belt Martial Arts Academy in Chelmsford.

In the first 90 minutes of the session, Dave took time to cover a number of techniques from the Gracie Jiu Jitsu (GJJ) self defence syllabus; with refinements to some I had already seen, along with some new material.

After a short water break, Dave spent the remaining 90 minutes working on methods of attacking with and the defending of the triangle choke; giving options and logical progressions for each.

I was very happy to see how well the seminar was supported, with almost 30 people on the mat. Joining academy members were students from SD Martial Arts in Colchester, Westcoast BJJ in Wales as well as from Dave’s own academy, Dartford BJJ in Kent.
