Sambo / Sombo
Sambo (also know as Sombo or Cambo), is a Russian martial art and jacket-based wrestling combat sport. The word “SAMBO” itself is an portmanteau of SAMooborona Bez Oruzhiya, or literally “self-defense without weapons” in English.
Sambo, developed in the 1920’s initially as a hand to hand combat system for the Red Army, has roots in Japanese Judo and Karate, as well as many other Continental European, Near East and Central Asian wrestling styles.
As a martial art, techniques are evaluated and refined to reach the ultimate goal of stopping an armed or unarmed adversary in the least time possible, giving excellent Self Defence skills
As a sport Sambo, looks much like freestyle wrestling and Judo, although there are some differences as to legal techniques.
